WEB MARKETING From a marketing point of view, the Internet is just another marketing device as is putting an advertisement on the back of a bus, but if used properly it can be a very cost-effective means of marketing your product. Designing your web site is the easy bit. If you want hits on your site, you have to market it. This is a real headache. Getting people to come to your site is a real challenge, encouraging them to stay is even harder but the real trick is making them return - repeatedly if possible! Have a look at MARKETINGTIPS for an excellent course on Internet marketing. The following is based on my own experience and explains what works - and doesn't work - for me. YOUR real work starts now! GENERAL
These are methods which are generally applicable: PAY
SEARCH ENGINE SUBMISSION
If you want to display your site to the outside world, correct search engine and index submission is vital and can make all the difference between success and failure. There is a lot of nonsense talked about submissions. Have a look at the SUBMISSION tutorial. SPREAD THE WORD!
1. Bore everyone you meet senseless talking about your site. 2. Put your site's URL on all your correspondence, business cards, adverts etc. TELL A FRIEND
Remarkably effective. You can get a tell-a-friend facility from BRAVENET. It encourages viral marketing i.e. people telling other people. PERMISSION MARKETING
Very effective but you have to pay for it! You buy a list of email addresses specifically targeted to the market you are after. (The recipients will have already given their permission for you to send them emails.) And away you go! LINKS
Try to get other sites to link to yours. This gives you an advert and improves your standing on some search engines. Put up a special Link To Me page. EZINES & CHATROOMS
EMAIL
1. Use your email automatic signature block to put an advert as a PS to every message. 2. Use your email autoresponder (if it has one) to contain a similar advert. BANNER EXCHANGES
Received wisdom has it that banner exchanges generate 0.5% click-throughs, 1% of which result in sales. This means that 20,000 banner views result in 100 click-throughs and 1 sale. I think that with some schemes the real figure may be as low as 0.2% click-throughs and 0.5% sales: 100,000 banner views for one sale. Judge for yourself! FFA
Free For All links suck. They are a complete waste of time. SPECIFIC
The following work for me but are not applicable to everyone: FORUMS
If you have a specialist site and are an "expert" on the subject, then answer questions at on a forum about your topic and refer people to your site. JAVASCRIPT LIBRARIES
I have a couple of Javascripts up on various Javascript libraries and get A LOT of referrals from these.. |
