DEVELOPER: HOW TO CREATE A WEB SITE This tutorial is for beginner and novice web-site designers and builders. Even advanced builders will find something of interest. It is a distillation of what I have learned and should save you a lot of time and money hunting about the Web. WEBNAME
You need a Web username. Use the WebName for all sites where you need to log on. Often you will need to join a site to get additional benefits. Make this WebName unique. If you have a common name e.g. J Smith, select a username such as JSmif965. Or you could use a pet name such as Tiddles (or whatever!). If you use different usernames, make a note of the usernames that you use for different sites. ALWAYS KEEP RECORDS!!! PASSWORD
Unless you have some delicate information to protect, think up a password that you can easily remember e.g. the name of the street where you live. Choose a password of eight letters/numbers e.g. adelaide and stick with it or you will get confused!! A better and more secure password mixes letters/numbers/signs e.g. X2&bdE$k but is harder to remember! You may not want to write the password down!!! EMAIL ADDRESSES
If you are developing your own site, it is a good idea to get two email addresses: one for personal use and one for the web site. I recommend GMAIL. Try to avoid collecting email addresses. ACCEPTING PAYMENTS
If you want to accept payments on your site, I recommend PAYPAL. MONEYBOOKERS are also useful for transferring money. DOMAIN NAME
WEB SPACE
Either purchase your own or get some stuff free. Mostly the free stuff come with adverts. GEOCITIES is as good as any and better than most. If you want good paid-for space, try ECHOECHOPLUS or INMOTIONHOSTING. STARTING WITH HTML
Now you are ready to start developing!!! If you are new to HTML and want to start writing pages quickly, go to the PAGE DESIGN tutorial for an easy start to page development. Next do some research. Look at various sites to get some design ideas. Remember that you can usually access the site's source code (View|Source on the browser menu bar.) HTML is a pretty big subject and there are several good help sites and tutorial books available. I am not going to try to reinvent the wheel but merely point you in the direction of: ECHOECHO, JALFREZI and W3SCHOOLS. Books are available from AMAZON. Check out your code with: HTML VALIDATOR. PRETTYPRINT is very useful for checking tables. Read the US GOVERNMENT'S SECTION 508 about accessibility. Is your site designed to be viewable by people with color deficit? You may wish to check your site at VISCHECK. GRAPHICS
You may have your own graphics-design facility. If not, the following sites are very useful: COOL TEXT, NBSWEBFX, ANIMATION FACTORY - Several thousand FREE Animations, web graphics and clipart items. LABEL MAKER It is sensible to optimize your graphics: GIFCRUNCHER . BELLS AND WHISTLES
Now to tart your site up!!! The following sites offer a variety of FREE (my favourite price!!!) stuff to help you develop your site.
BRAVENET for goodies, SNAPFILES for all the latest news.
How popular is your site? Let people vote! Vote at: WEBBIEWORLD SITE STATISTICS
Want to know who has been accessing your site??? I certainly do! You have to pay for the best statistics. Try WEB-STAT. PPHLOGGER is the best free statistics monitor that I've found but you have to install it yourself. AFFILIATES
Wanna make some money?? There are a lot of schemes available. Try and find one suited to your site. SEARCH ENGINE SUBMISSION
What use is your site if people can't find it? Now submit it to search engines. Look at the SEARCH tutorial for details of how to submit to search engines and the MARKETING tutorial for advice on how to market your site. ACCESS YOUR WEB SPACE FROM ANYWHERE!What use is your web space site if you can't get at it? NET2FTP lets you access your web space from anywhere.... home, library, cyber cafe etc... PROJECT DETAILS
For each project that you do, keep the following records: PERSONAL USERNAME: brownsa3 PERSONAL PASSWORD: adelaide PROJECT/SITE TITLE: Orange smoke PROJECT/SITE USERNAME: Orangesm PROJECT PASSWORD: PL9%5rF3 EMAIL: orangesm@yahoo.com URL: http://www.xyz.com/orangesm/ BRAVENET: Login: orangesm WEBBIEWORLD: Ref no: 124351 FINAL WORDS
ALWAYS WORK TO OBJECTIVES. If you have clear objectives when you sit down for a session on your computer, you will achieve far more than just randomly surfing. You can download pretty pictures and backgrounds for your own collection: put the cursor on the picture and click the right mouse button and then 'save as' to your disc. You can always see how the source code was written by clicking on the menu View|Source. Allocate some time to just surfin'. You will soon get to know what constitutes a good site. Don't collect email addresses. You only need one for personal use and one for each project that you do. Always keep records of what you do. |
